Company Background

The Bank of Scotland was founded in 1695 and is Scotland’ oldest bank and only one year younger than the Bank of England. It was set up to develop Scotland’s trade with England and the Low Countries. In 1696, the Bank of Scotland became the first bank in Europe to issue paper currency.

In 1959, it achieved another first. It was the first bank in Europe to introduce a computer for centrally processing accounts.

The Bank of Scotland expanded considerably from the 1970s due to the massive potential of North Sea Oil. The company had its own oil division and played a leading role in establishing the International Oil and Energy Bank.

It opened office in the US, Hong Kong, Moscow and Singapore. In 1987, it bought Countrywide in New Zealand and the Bank of Western Australia. In 2009, the Bank of Scotland was acquired by Lloyds TSB and it then began using Lloyds Bank Cardnet for its merchant services.

Bank of Scotland Merchant Services Reviews

There are no online reviews for the Bank of Scotland’s Merchant Services division and very few reviews about Cardnet. However, Cardnet seems to be respected company which has had very few complaints against it, which in itself speaks volumes for a company of its size.

The main form of complaint seems to be poor customer service and delayed or frozen payments. The latter are funds held by high risk or card-not-present merchants, which would occur no matter who the merchant account provider was.
