Company Background
Paysafecard was launched in Austria in 2000 as a way for consumers to pay safely online. After a successful first year, the card was introduced in Germany. The company has expanded considerably since 2000 and is now Europe’s leading prepaid payment solution.
In 2000, the only way to acquire a paysafecard was to buy it at a sales outlet. Two years later, paysafecard was available as an e-voucher and in 2004, you could buy it online. Spurred on by their success, paysafecard expanded into the UK, Greece, Slovenia, Spain and Slovakia in 2006. That year, the company was awarded EU funding to aid its expansion and its efforts to promote payments without credit cards.
Paysafecard was given an e-money licence by the British FCA in 2008, which allowed the company to issue e-money throughout Europe. The same year paysafecard processed over 15 million transactions. In 2009, paysafecard added another 10 European countries to its books and it was launched in Argentina. That same year, the company gained a MasterCard licence.
By 2010, the company’s tenth anniversary, it had expanded into the US and Mexico. Paysafecard’s product portfolio now included YUNA Prepaid MasterCard, which meant it was possible to pay anywhere that MasterCard was accepted. In 2011, paysafecard launched its app for mobile phones.
Paysafecard is now accepted in 45 countries around the world. It’s available in 26 currencies and over 600,000 sales outlets.
