Company Background

Founded in 1838 with nominal capital of £1 million, Clydesdale Bank’s aim was to provide banking services in Glasgow that were on a par with Edinburgh. Within 5 years, the bank had 9 branches, plus, it had absorbed the Greenock Union Bank. By 1913, it had 149 branches.

In 1920, after three years of negotiation, Clydesdale Bank merged with London Joint City and Midland Bank. Clydesdale also had an association with the North of Scotland Bank. It was one of the first banks in the 1970s to introduce automated banking, including ATM’s and keypads in branches.

In 1987, National Australia Bank acquired Clydesdale Bank, followed by Yorkshire Bank in 1995. These two banks started operating until a single banking licence in 2005, with Yorkshire Bank becoming a division of Clydesdale.

In January 2016, the shareholders in National Australia Bank noted in favour to spin off Clydesdale (including Yorkshire Bank) and float it on the London and Australian stock-markets. CYBG (Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks) were estimated to have a value of £2 billion, with 2.8 million customers and a joint total of 275 branches. The National Australia Bank held 75% of the shares on demerger.
